Visceral Fascia

As stated previously, fascia is the component of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every muscle, fluid vessel, bone, nerve fiber and organ in place.  Manual therapy related to the structures in the chest and abdomen deep to the muscular system is generally called Visceral Manipulation.
Visceral fascia:
The purpose of manual therapy of the visceral fascia is to restore, harmonize, and enhance communication within the body, optimizing its internal mechanism and facilitating freer movement for better health. Working with the visceral fascia provides a means to evaluate and address the influence of structures positioned in front of the spine, including organs and their fascial attachments which have intricate relationships to the spine, pelvis, hips, knees, and shoulder girdle.

Visceral therapy facilitates the restoration of physiological motion in tissues, promoting normal movement of the body, and fosters improved communication within the body by enhancing the functioning of the nervous, circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems. By softening the surrounding fascia of these structures, or by releasing restrictions such as adhesions or scars, pressure is reduced, facilitating better fluid exchange and waste removal.

Working with the viscera can sometimes be the missing piece in persist pain, tension, and stress patterns.  As we move, our organs move along with us. Tension around an organ can lead to global biomechanical imbalances. For example, tension around the sigmoid colon over the iliac fossa can limit hip rotation and result in tight hip flexors.

By identifying areas of tension or adhesions, gentle and sensitive touch is employed to unwind the tension, revitalizing the affected area and alleviating symptoms of pain, inflammation, dysfunction, and poor posture.

Visceral manual therapy can be combined with specific neural techniques to further enhance treatment outcomes, such as regulating the vagus nerve. Additionally, it can be used in combination with acupuncture.
